Performance Objective:  To research current information on mental or clinical disorders utilizing the Media Center's resources and electronic resources .

Assignment:  Students will research a specific mental or clinical disorder selected from the list below. The report must include three references, one reference must be from a book.


The Report must include the following information:
Describe the disorder.
Include causes signs or symptoms of the disorder.
Are there any possible genetic predispositions to the disorder?
Is the disorder treatable/curable?
What are the newest medications or treatments? What are these medications or treatments intended to do?
Are there any side-effects to the medications or treatments? If so, describe them.

    • Pervasive Developmental Disorders -Autism, Asperger's Disorder, Rett's Disorder.
    • Communication Disorders - i.e. stuttering
    • Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder - ADD, ADHD 
    • Tourette's Disorder
    • Dyslexia
    • Separation Anxiety Disorder
    • Alzheimer's
    • Schizophrenia
    • Passive-Agressive Disorder
    • Clinical Depression
    • Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depressive)
    • Anxiety Disorder - i.e. school phobia, social phobia, panic disorder, separation disorder
    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
    • Phobias (see me)
    • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
    • Hypochondria

General Encyclopedia:

Worldbook and Encyclopedia Americana will both have basic information for your system.

Special Encyclopedia:

The New Encyclopedia of Science REF 503 CLA. Check the index in Volume 9 for your specific disease or system.

Reference:

The American Medical Association Encyclopedia of Medicine REF 610 AME. Dictionary format - coveres many diseases.

Non-Fiction:

The American Medical Association Family Medical Guide. 610 KUN Covers many systems and disorders.

National Institute of Mental Health

Symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of various mental illnesses.

Psych Central

Mental health and psychology resources

Internet Mental Health
Offers a wide variety of information of mental health issues.

Covers disorders of the brain and nervous system.

The center for disease control and prevention's site that covers about every possible disease. Search alphabetically.

Harvard's family health guide; includes a section on diseases.
